Residents in Sembakkam near Tambaram are furious as garbage has been piling up along Velachery Main Road for the past few days. The transfer station at Kannadapalayam in West Tambaram is reported to have reached its full capacity with a labour dispute there preventing the clearance of the trash to the Venkatamangalam waste-to-energy plant. While the authorities concerned finally managed to get the disposal resumed on Friday afternoon, it may be a few days before the situation returns to normal.
Waste from 35 eateries and 15,000 homes in the municipality generate 22 tonnes of garbage per day.
With no clearance, all the 80 bins and 30 tri-cart vehicles are now overflowing with garbage.
Hoteliers told The Hindu that the civic body cleared garbage from the restaurants once in two days and from households on a daily basis but there had been no clearance for the past two days.
“The pile-up at the transfer station is due to a dispute between workers of a sub-contractor and their management over wage dues. This issue is now being sorted out,” an official said.
