A centre of excellence in hip arthroscopy was launched at Apollo Hospitals recently. The launch coincided with the inauguration of an official conference on orthopaedics – Congress on Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine International Chapter.
Hip arthroscopy is a surgical procedure, in which the surgeon inserts an arthroscope or small camera into the hip joint. The display helps the surgeon guide instruments into the joint to tackle a problem.
“Up until recently, the only option available for patients with hip problems was the traditional open surgery. The advantages of hip arthroscopy are: no pain, no blood loss and the patient can go home in a day,” said Madan Mohan Reddy, head of the centre.
The procedure can be used to treat a number of sports-related injuries, as well as the increasing number of young patients who come in with arthritis, said Dr. Reddy.
“Both with younger patients and the elderly, the expectations and demands are now higher – thanks to an increased life span, everybody wants to be able to live, walk and perform all their activities pain-free,” he said.
Minimally-invasive surgery that focuses on restoration, not replacement is the way forward and this procedure allows for that, said Preetha Reddy, executive vice chairperson, Apollo Hospitals.
Chairman Prathap C. Reddy said the goal at Apollo Hospitals has always been to deliver care of global standards to patients in India. “We are now concentrating on establishing departments of sports medicine along with rehabilitation departments, and we will continue to live up to the expectations of patients,” he said.
