Tension prevailed for more than an hour in front of the office of a Tamil television channel as Hindu Munnani cadre staged a demonstration on Sunday protesting the screening of a talk show.
The cameraman of the channel was injured as he tried to record the proceedings.
About 300 activists protested against the screening of the show relating to marriage symbols. When the cameraman was recording the protest, the activists not only assaulted him but also damaged the equipment, according to witnesses.
The channel’s employees have accused the police officialsof not providing adequate protection to journalists.
A senior police official said the problem started when the Hindu Munnani activists tried to stop the cameraman from recording the protest. In the melee the camera was damaged.
While the police official denied any assault on the cameraman, he said 10 persons have been taken into custody for causing damage to the camera.
Several associations, including Consortium of Journalists of India, Tamilnadu Pathirikaialargal Sammelanam and Tamilnadu Media Cameraman’s Association, have condemned the attack on the cameraman and the police for refusing to provide protection to journalists.
