Claiming that there cannot be two different fee structures for colleges run by the same State government, students of Raja Muthiah Medical College has approached the Madras High Court to restrain the college from demanding fee in excess of what is prescribed by the government.
142 students
About 142 students who have joined MBBS course in the Raja Muthiah Medical College affiliated to Annamalai University in 2014-15 has moved the High Court alleging that the college, legally being run by the State government, was demanding fee in excess of what is prescribed by the government.
Annamalai University, which was functioning under the provisions of the Annamalai University Act, 1928 as a private university, was taken over by the State in 2013 over large-scale financial and administrative irregularities in the institution.
“In 2013, the Government introduced the Annamalai University Bill, 2013, which was enacted as an Act in the State legislative. Further, the Annamalai University Act, 1928 was repealed,” the petitioners added.
When the government is charging Rs. 16,290 as fee for MBBS course, our college which is also run by the government, is insisting on payment of Rs. 5.54 lakh, which is illegal, the students claimed.
They sought the court to direct the college and the university to receive fees on par with government colleges and not charge any amount in excess.
Admitting the petition, Justice M.M. Sundresh passed an interim direction to the government to collect Rs. 2.25 lakh as fee for the MBBS course and Rs. 1.25 lakh for BDS course till the final disposal of the petition.
