Sleuths from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) arrested two persons for trying to smuggle in heroin at Chennai Central Station.
A total of six kilograms of the narcotic worth Rs.9 crore was seized from them.
On Saturday night, the DRI received information that Sheik Faheem (25) from Mumbai would be smuggling in heroin to Chennai on a train that would be arriving at Chennai Central on Sunday.
“At 4.55 a.m, Dadar express reached platform number 1 of the station. He was travelling by the general compartment. We waited for him and all of us were in plain clothes to avoid detection,” said RPF Inspector N. Alagarsamy.
The accused was carrying a bag. He passed the officers and reached outside the Moore Market Complex.
“We were trailing him. There he met another man by name Sivanesan (50). When they exchanged the bag, we nabbed them,” said Mr. Alagarsamy.
There was four kilograms of heroin in the bag.
During interrogation, Sivanesan, a native of Velankanni, said that he was planning to smuggle the narcotics to Sri Lanka by boat and from there to other customers across the world. “Sivanesan said that two more kilograms of the narcotic was there in his house. A DRI team raided the house and seized the heroin,” said Mr. Alagarsamy.
The duo was arrested. “Six months ago, we seized six kg of heroin from Chennai Central,” said Mr. Alagarsamy.
