Welcoming the recent order of the Southern Bench of National Green Tribunal, residents of Anakaputhur, Pammal and Pozhichalur have appealed to the Kancheepuram district administration to help put an end to pollution in Adyar river. A couple of days ago the NGT had asked the Chennai Rivers Restoration Trust (CRRT) to file a detailed report on the projects undertaken by various government agencies.
‘Stop sewage from flowing into the river’
Local bodies close to the river, dumped garbage on its banks, residents said. According to residents of Pozhichalur and Gowl Bazaar, tanker drivers release untreated sewage early in the morning in the river.
Residents’ welfare association activists from Anakaputhur charged that the greatest polluter of the river was untreated effluents from the tanneries and the beautification of the river would not work until letting of sewage water and dumping of garbage are stopped.
