Accused used to procure rectified spirit, labels from Puducherry
The Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW) police on Friday arrested S. Venkatesan alias Ramkumar (27) of Kandhili village in Vellore district on charges of operating a small spurious liquor manufacturing unit at Nolumbur in Chennai.
According to a press release, a PEW team conducted a surprise check in Adayalamedu along the Cooum river bank on March 22. The police unearthed the spurious liquor manufacturing unit and seized some contraband and fake holograms. A worker Gnanasekharan (32) of Melattur village in Sriperumbudur was arrested.
On further investigation, Venkatsan was arrested. The modus operandi of the accused was to procure rectified spirit, labels and other materials from Puducherry. The spurious liquor bottles would be sold through agents on days when the Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) outlets of the TASMAC were closed.
