At the Madras Christian College School in Chetpet, students from various schools for the hearing impaired and organisations working with them celebrated the 53rd international day of the deaf with music, dance and drama.
Though the students could not hear they danced to film music with élan. T.K.M. Sandeep, chief executive of Deaf Enabled Foundation (DEF), which organised the event, said the programme was part of the International Week of the Deaf celebrated in the last week of September. The aim was to provide a platform for those with hearing impairment to showcase their talents.
He said that it was necessary to impress upon people that persons with hearing impairment also liked to watch television programmes.
Meritorious students from various schools in the city received Helen Keller Award for their outstanding performance. The award consists of a plaque, citation and scholarship for a year. Prizes were distributed to winners of painting and quiz contests held as part of Independence Day. Teachers were honoured for their exceptional service with the Annie Sullivan Award.
M. Amarender Reddy, Deputy General Manager, State Bank of Mysore, which has been a sponsor and R. Gopalakrishna, Deputy General Manager, Bank of India, who distributed the prizes, assured the DEF of their support.
