Residents of Triplicane are hopeful that their long-pending demand for a separate premise for the century-old Parthasarathy temple post office will soon be fulfilled.
The Madras High Court has ordered notice to the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department (HR&CE department) on a writ petition filed by residents against cancelling allocation of premises on Car Street, Triplicane.
Residents said the court’s intervention would help them gain a separate building for the century-old post office. They recalled that the HR&CE department had allocated about 500 sq. ft. of space in one of its buildings on Car Street almost a year ago. Though the postal department had fulfilled the conditions laid, the department had given the premises to a bank to operate an ATM.
The Parthasarathy temple post office was merged with Triplicane post office for want of space in 2011. About 300 pensioners and over 2,000 savings bank account holders are dependent on the post office. “Several senior citizens have to walk two km to carry out transactions in the Triplicane post office located on the busy Triplicane High Road,” said T.J. Ramani, a resident.
