HC orders notice on D.D. medical college students’ plea

The Madras High Court on Friday ordered notice on writ petitions seeking direction to the government to take over D.D. Medical College in Tiruvallur district.

The petitions have been filed at the instance of the college’s 2012-13 MBBS Students Welfare Association to enable them to complete the course and to regularise admission for the year’s batch.

The students had also sought a direction to the Centre to approve the college under the Indian Medical Council Act and regularise admission of the 2011-12 and 2012-13 batches of MBBS course.

Earlier, when the petitions came up, the petitioners’ counsel had sought issue of notice to the authorities and to take up the petitions early. However, the Judge made it clear that the students could not have two parallel proceedings one by way of a fast and the other by initiating writ petitions. The court would not take up the matter.

When the petitions came up for hearing, counsel submitted that the students had withdrawn the fast from Friday in view of the court’s stand. Following this, the court took up the matter and ordered notice returnable by October 28.
