HC surprised at Centre reducing funds for police modernisation

April 25, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:49 am IST - CHENNAI:

Even as the State government submitted that Central government has reduced grants for Modernisation of Police Force (MPF) scheme, the Madras High Court has asked the Centre to examine its stand, citing the importance of “dire need” of modernisation of the force.

In his counter affidavit filed on petitions seeking to install CCTV cameras in police stations, the Inspector General of Police (Administration) said that the Centre “has now considerably reduced” the grant under the MPF scheme. However, the State government was doing its best to provide funds from available resources, he stated. The first Bench comprising Chief Justice S.K. Kaul and Justice T.S. Sivagnanam said they were “surprised” to note the Centre’s stand in reducing the grant for the scheme. “We need not emphasise the importance of dire need of modernisation of the police force..,” they said.
