Harrington Road resident replaces broken tiles at Corporation park

Archana Bansal, a resident of Harrington Road, visits Chetpet Eco Park every day for a walk. Strapped for time, she skipped her appointment with the Eco Park one day and went to the Corporation park on Harrington Road. Having to walk on a track where the tiles were loose and uneven, she found the walk far from pleasant.

“It was unsafe to walk on those tiles. People can trip over them. As a resident of Harrington Road who used the park often, I decided to get it fixed,” she recalls.

What followed was a week-long process of phone calls, inspection, selection and supervision.

A week’s task

An interior designer, Archana interacts with contractors frequently. She asked one of them to inspect the spot and see if the tiles could be replaced, without disturbing the other portions of the park.

“A resident had told me that the roots of a tree could have probably dislodged the tiles. But it was later found that it was not the tree but just the problem of not laying the tiles properly,” she says, adding that the contractor did not charge her anything.

After seeking permission from Greater Chennai Corporation officials, she arranged for the workforce, sand and cement. “I picked up a tile sample from the site and took it to my tile supplier to get sets of the closest matching tile,” she explains.

Three days of organising and three days of fixing the tiles were all it took Archana to fix the walkway.
