H. Raja kicks off campaign in Chennai

The Bharatiya Janata Party’s national general secretary, H. Raja, who is contesting from T. Nagar constituency, a popular commercial and residential area, kicked off his campaign on Thursday morning.

Mr. Raja began canvassing for votes near Kannamapet area after praying at the Vembuli Amman temple on South Usman road in T. Nagar. He went around distributing pamphlets, which listed a number of promises to the voters in the constituency.

“There are a string of problems in the constituency. There are long-pending issues such as heavy traffic congestion; increase in crime and lack of proper lighting,” he said, adding, “The constituency also lacks an adequate number of public parks and playgrounds.”

The constituency has traditionally been a good voter base for the BJP. In the Lok Sabha election in 2014, the party came second just behind the AIADMK’s candidate, pushing the DMK to the third place. While traffic congestion seems to be a major issue plaguing the residents, roadside hawkers say that parking is a major issue. “The issues we face are congestion, people parking cars on the roads and garbage,” said a pavement shop owner.
