As part of the initiatives to avert crime against women passengers on trains and railway premises, the Government Railway Police have deployed women police personnel in plainclothes to travel in suburban trains.
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (Railways) V. Ponran, teams comprising a Sub-Inspector and six constables would travel in suburban trains on Chennai-Tiruttani and Chennai-Gummidipoondi sectors. “The objective is to prevent crimes against women such as eve-teasing, bag lifting, chain-snatching etc. The women police will also mingle with the crowd at major railway stations. This will be a permanent security measure.”
