The State government is taking action to protect the interest of farmers in the seven districts where pipelines were to be laid for GAIL’s Kochi-Kuttanad-Bengaluru-Mangaluru gas pipeline project, Industries Minister M.C. Sampath informed the Assembly on Monday.
Replying to Leader of the Opposition M.K. Stalin, who sought to know whether the government has taken any step over the issue, Mr. Sampath narrated the sequence of events, including the judgments delivered by the Supreme Court and the Madras High Court regarding the project. He said the government was committed to protecting the interests of the farmers in the seven western districts.
“The Chief Minister has urged the Prime Minister to protect the farmers’ interests in GAIL project. The State government has protected the farmers and will continue to protect their interests,” Mr. Sampath said.
Mr. Stalin had said that the pipelines were to pass through the seven districts for 300 km in the western region and farmers would be affected as the pipelines would be on cultivable lands.
