Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Thursday visited the family of a fisherman in Colachel, who died in the recent cyclone when he ventured for deep-sea fishing.

After meeting some aggrieved fishermen at Colachel and parish priest Rev. Fr. Edwin Wilson and receiving petitions from them, the Governor went to the house of John Davidson, who died on the high seas in the cyclone. When Mr. Banwarilal Purohit entered the house even as lamentations filled the air, a couple of youths questioned the purpose of his visit.

“Neither the State government nor the Union government has made sincere efforts to locate the missing fishermen. At a time when we have been left helpless by the official machinery, there is no need for the Governor to visit us,” one of the fuming youths shouted, even as relatives and the officials at the scene tried to pacify them.

After being with the wailing family members of John Davidson for a while and assuring them of all possible help, a visibly shaken Governor left for Suchindram, where he inspected the flood-hit fields and the damaged bypass road at Karkaadu.

Visiting the Vivekananda Rock Memorial around noon, Mr. Banwarilal meditated there for a while before returning to the Circuit House, where he reviewed the ongoing relief operations and the progress made in other development works in which top officials from various departments, who have camped in the district to expedite the restoration work, participated.
