Two million more nurses are needed in the country to cater for the growing healthcare industry. The demand can be met only if the community gives nurses the respect and acknowledgement they deserve, Member of Parliament Kanimozhi said here on Monday.

She was addressing ‘Melange 2010,' a celebration by Apollo Hospitals to commemorate the service and spirit of nurses, and also to showcase their talent and excellence in other fields such as music, dance, literature and sports.

Speaking on the occasion, Information Technology Minister Poongothai Aladi Aruna said nurses play a key role in forming a link between the physician, patient and medicines.

“Studies have shown that communication with the patient helps in reducing complications in health, and nurses play a major role in counselling the patients,” she added.

Apollo Hospitals group Chairman Prathap C. Reddy emphasised the importance of nurses in the treatment and recovery of patients.

“Though we have the best doctors and technology, the appreciation letters we get are majorly about the care our nurses give to patients,” he said. Appreciation awards were given to doctors, nurses and paramedics who excelled in different areas of medical service.

Apollo Hospitals Director (Finance) Suneeta Reddy and Managing Director Preetha Reddy were also present at the function.
