A girl who was crying for help from a speeding car was rescued by a police constable at the toll gate on East Coast Road early on Thursday.

After moving the poorly dressed girl to safety, the policeman tried to apprehend the suspects and got injured in the scuffle. The accused escaped from the scene.

According to police, passers-by heard the victim raising an alarm from a luxury car around 1.30 a.m. and informed the Police Control Room. Head constable Krishnamoorthy attached to the Neelankarai police intercepted the vehicle at the toll gate and pulled out the girl.

When he tried to apprehend three others in the car, they allegedly assaulted him and escaped. Krishnamoorthy was administered first aid in a nearby hospital. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Adyar) K.A. Senthil Velan said the girl was a native of Mumbai and had come to Chennai with a friend last week. “We are investigating how she got into the vehicle. A special team has been formed to locate the vehicle and apprehend accused persons,” Dr. Senthil Velan said.
