Minutes after a Park Town-bound train rolled out of the Chepauk MRTS station on Tuesday afternoon, a young girl jumped off. The girl, later identified as a nursing student, was trying to leave the train after she realised that her friends had not boarded it.

Southern Railway staff on duty at Chepauk railway station told The Hindu that the girl, Manimozhi, a first-year nursing student, had come to Marina Beach along with two of her friends. A resident of Tambaram, she had boarded the train planning to get down at Chennai Park station so as to get on a connecting train.

However, she realised that her friends had not climbed on, and jumped. Commuters waiting on the platform on the opposite side alerted R. Palani, the Station Superintendent. The staff and her friends lifted and placed her on the stone slab on the platform. Meanwhile, the 108 ambulance service was informed.

The girl, who was conscious, was unable to stand. The paramedical staff checked the girl’s blood pressure and rushed her to Government Royapettah Hospital (GRH). Officials said the girl had no external injuries but complained of pain in the head. She was referred to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital where she was advised to get admitted. However, she left shortly afterwards.
