Girl elopes, father kills self

October 18, 2013 02:37 am | Updated 02:37 am IST - CHENNAI:

An autorickshaw driver committed suicide at his home in Mogappair East on Thursday morning, as he was allegedly depressed about his 15-year-old daughter’s eloping with a man. Police have arrested the youth for kidnapping a minor and marrying her, and have also arrested the youth’s uncle for abetting the offence.

J.J. Nagar police said the deceased was Ravi (46), a resident of Collector Nagar. On Monday, his daughter eloped with Sukumar (23) of Ayappakkam, who works as a salesperson at a departmental store.

Ravi lodged a ‘girl missing’ complaint with the police soon after. However, the teenager returned on Wednesday, after tying the knot with Sukumar. Upset about this and because of taunts from relatives, Ravi killed himself by hanging. Ravi’s relatives then urged police to take action against Sukumar.

Sensing the seriousness of the situation Sukumar and his uncle Moorthy, a realtor, surrendered on Thursday afternoon. They were arrested and remanded to custody. The girl was sent to a government home, police said.
