Couple is from different castes; agitated villagers block traffic in Tiruvallur

There was tension on NH5, near Karanodai in Tiruvallur, on Tuesday night when an agitated group blocked traffic with the body of a 48-year-old man who had allegedly committed suicide. He had taken the extreme step after his teenage daughter eloped with a man belonging to a different community.

The Sholavaram police said around 8 p.m., residents of Jagannathapura Chatram village and nearby areas sat on Janappan Chatram Koot Road with the body of Ravi, a resident of the village and a caretaker of a marriage hall.

On Tuesday afternoon, Ravi’s daughter Vishnupriya (18), a second-year engineering student eloped with her boyfriend Ranjith (18), an unemployed Dalit youth from Athipedu Colony, 3 km from Jagannathapura Chatram.

“Ravi was at his workplace when he heard the news about his daughter. Dejected, he consumed brandy mixed with poison. His co-workers rushed him to a hospital, but he was declared brought dead,” said a police officer.

As news of the incident spread, angry villagers staged a road roko, disrupting traffic for over two hours. “They demanded the couple come to the spot. An hour later, they dispersed and the body was sent for post-mortem to Government General Hospital in Ponneri,” said T. Senthil Kumar, additional superintendent of police, Tiruvallar.

The Sholavaram police have registered a case of abetment of suicide
