A five-year-old girl died in a freak accident in Big Kancheepuram on Tuesday night.

Kalpika was the daughter of Rajesh, a resident of Big Kancheepuram. According to the police, the accident took place around 8 p.m. when the idols of Sri Katchabeswarar temple were being taken through Senkazhuneer Odai Street as part of the ongoing annual festival of the temple.

The girl, who was watching the procession, suddenly ran across the street and came under the wheels of the truck that carried the ‘yaanai vahanam.’ She sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital. The girl was referred to another hospital in Porur and died on her way there, the police said.
