A nine-year-old girl, travelling with her parents to her native village, died when the government bus in which she was travelling rammed a lorry on Chennai Bypass near Tambaram on Sunday morning.

M. Kalaiarasi was on her way to celebrate Tamil New Year on Monday along with her parents and other close relatives, at their native village near Tirukoilur in Villupuram district.

Kalaiarasi’s parents and other relatives work in a brick kiln near Red Hills. On Sunday morning, the family boarded the government bus at Koyambedu.

Near Tambaram, the bus rammed the lorry, carrying a consignment of rice bags, when its driver tried to overtake it. In the impact, the right side of the bus was severely damaged.

Ten passengers, including the driver, were injured and taken to a private hospital near Tambaram, where Kalaiarasi died. Her body was taken to Tambaram Taluk Government Hospital, where a post-mortem was performed. The Chromepet traffic police are investigating the accident.
