A third year college student, accused of theft, committed suicide in her house in Besant Nagar on Tuesday night. Four lecturers, who allegedly humiliated the girl in the college, were arrested by the Chennai Police on charges of abetting the suicide.

According to police sources, K. Divya (21) of Olcott Kuppam, a student of Dr.MGR Janaki College of Arts and Science for Women, was found hanging from the ceiling in her room on Tuesday. She had left a suicide note.

The day before, the victim told her mother that four lecturers had conducted a search on her in connection with a theft. A student had informed the college authorities that she lost Rs.4,000 in the classroom, following which the lecturers suspected the involvement of Divya.

Demanding stern action against the lecturers, the family members and relatives of Divya staged a protest on Wednesday in front of the college. They also marched to the Shastri Nagar police station in support of their demand.

They dispersed after senior police officials intervened and promised to take action.

A special team formed to investigate the case arrested lecturers Jayalakshmi, Vijayalakshmi, Selvi and Sudha. They were produced in a city court and remanded to judicial custody.
