Girl, 3, dies after fall from balcony

A three-year-old girl, Neelam, died after she allegedly slipped and fell from the balcony on the second floor of her house in Kothawal Chavadi in north Chennai on Monday.

Police said the incident took place around 8.30 a.m. when the child's mother Shanti Devi was taking elder daughter Sanjana to school. Neelam, who was left behind in their house on Amman Koil Street at Kothawal Chavadi, ran after her mother and got down the stairs to the second floor.

“She tried to look out for her mother from the balcony of the second floor and slipped and fell.

Head injury

She suffered severe head injuries and was rushed to a hospital by her mother and some neighbours. She succumbed to her injuries around 11.30 a.m.,” said S. Gunasekaran, Inspector of Police, Kothawal Chavadi.

Body handed over to family

Neelam's body was taken to the Government Stanley Hospital for post-mortem and was later handed over to her family, the police officer added.
