GH doctors receive award for research

A research paper by a team of neurologists from the Institute of Neurology Madras Medical College, Chennai has been selected for the Elsevier Atlas Award for June 2015.

The award winning paper paper titled ‘Application of mobile phones in Epilepsy Care’ was authored by R. Lakshmi Narasimhan, A.C. Somasundaram, S. Balasubramanian and K. Bhanu from MMC along with Man Mohan Mehndiratta evaluates the applications of mobile phones for day to day care of patients with epilepsy to see if they are effective for diagnosis, prognosis and as therapeutic tools. It was published in the International Journal of Epilepsy in the January to June issue this year, according to Dr. Somasundaram, one of the authors.

“There are a number of mobile applications on Android, iOS and Windows to support patients with epilepsy. There is, however, no real study to see if they really help them. There are a number of apps that both patients and physicians can use,” he said. The apps on the market now help patients maintain a seizure diary, learn more about their condition and give them medication reminders. The winning article every month is featured on the atlas website (http://www.elsevier.com/ atlas).
