Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital now has a comprehensive sports clinic. Inaugurated recently by State health minister C. Vijaya Baskar and health secretary J. Radhakrishnan, the Rs. 16-lakh facility is meant for sportspersons who want to improve their performance
According to N. Deen Muhammad Ismail, head of the orthopaedics department, the clinic, which will function on Tuesdays, will focus on sports physiology, psychology, physiotherapy, nutrition, yoga, medicine and injury.
“The sports injury section will be run by three orthopaedic surgeons trained in arthroscopy,” he said. Patients can come in for follow-ups on Friday.
The hospital has also established a compound fractures intensive care unit at a cost of Rs. 15 lakh. “In compound fractures, the bone comes out and often, dust gets into the body. The chances of infection in such cases are higher, and if we put them alongside regular orthopaedic patients, there is a risk of cross infections. So, we have established a one-of-a-kind separate ICU for them,” said Dr. Ismail.
The hospital also renovated its paediatric orthopaedics ward at a cost of Rs. 1.2 lakh.
The funds for the establishment and renovation were generated by the orthopaedics department under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme.
