German team visits Nemmeli

October 07, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - CHENNAI:

The visit of Germany’s government-owned development bank team on Tuesday has set the ball rolling for an ambitious project to set up the third desalination plant in the city at Nemmeli.

At a time when Chennai is reeling under a severe water crisis, this four-day visit of the German team from ‘KfW’ to finalise funding for the desalination project assumes more significance as it will make more water resources available.

The team, comprising Verena Willand, programme manager, KfW; Anirbun Kundu, senior sector specialist; Claus Mertes, technical expert and Haider Abbas, social expert, met Chennai Metrowater officials at the headquarters, Chintadripet, and visited the existing desalination plant at Nemmeli and the site where another plant will be constructed.

They are expected to have a discussion with the officials of the Finance Department and Municipal Administration and Water Supply Departments during their stay in Chennai.
