A businessman was cheated by a gang of four that posed as Income Tax officials here on Wednesday night.

According to police sources, N. Harif (35) of Pavalakkara Street who deals with air-conditioning machines was preparing to close his shop on Moore Street at around 9.30 p.m. on Wednesday when the gang stepped in. One of the suspects was holding a handcuff.

A safari-clad accused claimed to be an Income Tax official and demanded Harif to hand over the cash in the safe. Believing their words, the victim gave Rs. 3.3 lakh. Asking Harif to come to the Income Tax office in Nungambakkam and collect the cash after giving an undertaking, the accused left the scene.

On reaching the office, Harif realised that he was cheated. The North Beach police have formed a special team to investigate the case, the sources added.
