An armed gang allegedly abducted a boy returning home from school near Anna Nagar here on Monday evening.

According to police sources, R. Keerthivasan (13) of Anna Nagar Seventh Cross Street, studying IX Standard in a private school, entered his car around 4 p.m. when the suspects armed with knives forced the driver Govindaraju out of the vehicle.

The gang abandoned the vehicle near a temple on Ambattur Industrial Estate-Tirumangalam Road and took another vehicle to escape.

Keerthivasan's father Ramesh is a businessman.

While maintaining that no phone call was received by the victim's family, police said special teams were deployed at check-posts and all roads leading to Andhra Pradesh.

Top police officials, including Commissioner of Police T. Rajendran and Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) M. Shakeel Akhter were closely monitoring the investigation, the sources added.

“We are following some clues and a breakthrough is likely soon,” a police official said, adding that business rivalry could have been the motive.
