A fundraising concert in aid of Cancare Foundation will be held in the city on Thursday. Noted Carnatic vocalists Malladi Brothers and leading Dagarvani Dhrupad singers, the Gundecha Brothers, will come together in a special ‘jugalbandhi' to offer what promises to be a stunning confluence of voices and styles. Cancare Foundation, set up by a group of experienced oncologists, social workers and philanthropists, seeks to make a difference in the area of palliative care for the terminally ill.

Speaking on the initiative, Akhila Srinivasan, managing director, Shriram Life Insurance, and trustee, Cancare Foundation, said the concert evening would also mark the launch of the initiatives of the Foundation. “Providing care at patients' doorsteps is one of the services to be offered, where a trained medical professional and a nurse would visit the patients and provide appropriate treatment and care in their homes,” she said.

S.G.Ramanan, also a trustee of the Foundation, said the commute to a hospital and the wait there could be logistically complex and tedious for patients. “We are also looking at setting up a palliative care centre in the city with about 15 beds to start with. The Foundation is working on developing a course in palliative care, an area where we need more trained hands,” he said.

The Foundation will also offer financial support to persons suffering from cancer, who are unable to afford a surgery or the chemotherapy. “We want to educate people and raise the awareness on cancer prevention and cure,” Ms. Srinivasan added.

Once a good corpus is built, the initiatives would be expanded, trustees said. Thursday's concert will be held at Hotel Taj Coromandel for an invited audience.
