Free cloth bag for every family in Tiruvallur

July 27, 2013 10:34 am | Updated 10:34 am IST - KANCHEEPURAM:

In a bid to make Tiruvallur district plastic free, the district administration launched an incentive programme on Friday.

A cloth bag each will be distributed free of cost to each family in the district to encourage them to shun plastic bags.

To begin with, cloth bags will be distributed to school students, said collector, K. Veera Raghava Rao.

Launching the campaign at Gnana Vidyalaya School in Tiruvallur, the collector said non-governmental organisations would be roped in to raise the money needed to manufacture the cloth bags through women’s self-help groups (SHGs).

“The Rotary Club of Tiruvallur donated money for manufacturing of cloth bags for distribution in four wards of Tiruvallur municipality. These bags were made by women SHGs in Senkundram. The district administration hopes to cover around 6 lakh families in the district in about 3 to 4 months’ time,” said Mr. Veera Raghava Rao.
