A serving Sub-Inspector of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday was convicted and sentenced to four years’ rigorous imprisonment by the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Court for submitting a forged community certificate at the time of recruitment in 1996.
S. Ravi, the ACMM, also imposed a fine of Rs. 1 lakh on the convicted officer.
In 2010, the Anti Corruption Branch of CBI, Chennai registered the case against R. Nandagopal, Sub-Inspector of Police, CBI, Economic Offences Wing. According to the CBI, the recruitment drive was conducted in 1996 to fill four vacancies of constables in CBI, special unit under the categories of scheduled tribe (ST) and others.
When he was selected against the ST vacancy, he produced forged photocopy of community certificate purportedly to have been issued by Special Tahsildar, Myalapore before the recruitment officials to make it appear that he belonged to ST.
