Four engineering students died after the car they were travelling in rammed a container lorry parked on Madhavaram-Red Hills High Road here on Friday.

The accident occurred at 6.30 a.m. near the junction of MRH High Road and 200-ft Road, when the car driver tried to avoid hitting a cyclist, police said.

The Madhavaram traffic police identified the victims as Mayank Gupta (20) of New Delhi, Anuj Malpani (20) of Madhya Pradesh, Adithya Gupta (20) of West Bengal and Ankur Varma (20) of Uttar Pradesh. They were second year B.Tech students at SRM University, Kattankulathur. Mayank was driving the car, which belonged to his friend.

“All the four persons in the car died on the spot after the vehicle smashed into the rear of a container lorry,” said D. Vijayaramalu, Traffic Inspector of Police, Madhavaram. The students, who were going to Red Hills, took a wrong route and came on MRH Road. The lorry, on which an empty container was laden, had come to a halt following some electrical problem a few minutes before the accident. The driver had gone in search of a mechanic, sources added.

A police team from Madhavaram conducted preliminary investigations. Bodies of the victims were sent to the Government Stanley Hospital for post-mortem. The car, which was badly damaged, was taken to the Madhavaram police station.
