The police have launched an investigation into the mysterious death of four dogs in a street at Neelankarai.

The residents, who filed a police complaint, had formed a WhatsApp group and held programmes on better care of stray dogs.

Recently, they neutered, vaccinated and fastened reflector belts to the dogs in the area to ensure that they are not hit by any vehicle during night. On Wednesday, one of the residents posted pictures of the carcasses of four dogs on Fourth South Cross Street between Marakayar Nagar and Sunrise Avenue.

According to activists, one seemed to be have been poisoned and another was burnt, while the heads of the two other dogs had been crushed.

Case registered

The Neelankarai police have registered a case against ‘unknown persons.’ The carcasses were sent to the Madras Veterinary College for post-mortem. An activist, Ricarrdo Raj, said, “We are unable to comprehend as to why someone would take the lives of 4 young dogs in such a barbaric way. One of the major reasons for an incident like this is the possibility of a burglary being planned as street dogs are the first to alert us when a stranger enters the road.”
