Five persons were injured in a fire accident at an aromatics company in the Golden Jubilee Biotech Park for Women Society on Tuesday morning.

The smoke billowing from a shed inside Siruseri SIPCOT off OMR was seen from the IT corridor and the smell from the burning natural oils pervaded the air.

Sources said around 12.30 p.m., some welding work that was being done inside a shed had caused sparks, which fell on base oil stocked nearby. The machinery kept inside the shed caught fire and was gutted.

Two workers — Saravanan (37) and Bhaskar (53) — sustained severe injuries and were admitted to a private hospital in Porur. Company sources said they were being given treatment and were out of danger.

Three others — Iyyappan (30), Selvam (38), Silambarasan (28) — were given first aid at a private hospital in Kelambakkam.

They were taken to the hospital by the company’s managing director, who had asked the other employees to move away from the fire and then called the fire and rescue services.

Fire tenders from Thiruvanmiyur and Siruseri that had just finished putting out a fire in a flavours and fragrances manufacturing company in nearby Semmanchery rushed to the spot by 1 p.m.

As the fire spread to different containers inside the shed, fire service personnel faced difficulty in putting it out but succeeded in dousing the flames around 3.20 p.m.

The fire at the flavours and fragrances manufacturing company, which started around 11 a.m., spread as employees failed to notice it immediately. It was put out around 12 p.m., sources said.

Five men who were working in the unit escaped unharmed.
