Four Buddhist monks were injured when a gang ransacked the Mahabodhi Society Temple office here late on Monday, according to police sources.

About 10 persons, armed with clubs, barged into the Society office and damaged a showcase and furniture. The monks, all Sri Lankan nationals who tried to intervene, were attacked. They were admitted to a private hospital where their condition was said to be stable.

“The attack took place around 10 p.m. The monks speak only Sinhala and we are trying to arrange for translators. Special teams have been formed to apprehend the suspects,” Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) M. Shakeel Akhter said. The Egmore police have registered a case.
