A special police team has cracked the murder of a 65-year-old woman who was found dead with severe head injuries on a piece of open land in Kodungaiyur on July 3, 2011.

Four men have been arrested in connection with the killing.

According to police sources, the victim Pappathiammal was the caretaker of nine-grounds plot of land in Kadumpadi Amman Koil Street in Kodungaiyur where she was residing as well. Pappathiammal was also a money-lender.

Following the discovery of her body, the Kodungaiyur police registered a case and conducted investigations.

The case was taken up by a special team led by Assistant Commissioner of Police (MKB Nagar) Govi Manoharan and a thorough probe was held.

Many people in the area were questioned including those who had borrowed money from Pappathiammal.

“We zeroed in on four men who had been frequently creating a ruckus on the property a few days before the killing by plucking mangoes and throwing stones at Pappathiammal’s thatched hut," said Mr. Manoharan

"On interrogation, they confessed to have planned and committed the murder by smashing her head with a big stone. They fled with two gold rings from her hut,” the police official added.

The killers were identified as Mohan (22), Sakthivel alias Satish (22), Nolla Suresh (23) and Manimaran alias Flower Manimaran.

The four were daily wage labourers and residents of Kodungaiyur.

The four men were remanded in custody and sent to Puzhal prison on Thursday.
