The platinum jubilee of Children’s Garden School Society was celebrated on September 6 and 7.

Art director Thotta Tharani was the chief guest for Sept. 6, which was conducted at Narada Gana Sabha. A dance drama on Krishna was performed by the school children. Toppers of Classes X and XII were honoured during the event.On Sept. 7, Founder’s Day was celebrated in Music Academy. The function was presided by Justice V. Ramasubramanian, Judge, High Court, Madras.  R. Seshasaye, Executive Vice Chairman of Ashok Leyland, was the chief guest. Students and school’s alumni, planted 76 saplings to commemorate the number of years the school has been serving the society. Carnatic singers Priya Sisters, who are also alumni of the school, presented a vocal concert, while alumnus Punya Srinivas gave a veena concert.

Dr. Venkatesh Narayana Sharma and Mrs. Ellen Sharma instituted The Children Garden’s School Society in the year 1937 in Mylapore.The Sharmas’ vision was to provide quality education to all children. Their methodology was a judicious amalgam of ‘learning through play’ and ‘classroom teaching’.

Today the Society, under the able stewardship of Shakunthala Sharma, runs four schools — Children’s Garden Higher Secondary School, Mylapore; Ellen Sharma Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Sholinganallur; Mrs. Ellen Sharma Memorial Nursery and Primary School, Karaipakkam; and Mrs. Ellen Sharma Memorial Nursery and Primary School, Mylapore.
