The Crime Branch CID police on Monday arrested a former police officer, who was convicted along with a woman, in an abduction case.

According to a release, D. Ethiraj (70), formerly Deputy Superintendent of Police, Crime Records Bureau, Udhagamandalam, and Marry Kutty alias P.T. Thangam of Udhagamandalam were arrested in 1987 on charges of abducting two girls with the intention of forcing them into prostitution.

The police rescued the girls and arrested the accused.

A trial court convicted the duo and sentenced them to undergo different terms of imprisonment.

They filed appeal in the Madras High Court. After the Madras High Court confirmed the sentence, the accused obtained bail from the Supreme Court. Their appeals were dismissed by the Supreme Court on July 20 this year.

A special team of the CBCID that had a warrant issued by a district and sessions court in Udhagamandalam arrested Ethiraj in Chennai. He was produced before a court in Coimbatore and has been lodged in central prison there.

Efforts are on to apprehend Thangam, the release stated.
