April 02, 2014 10:53 am | Updated May 21, 2016 07:40 am IST - CHENNAI:

The district election office has started tracking all flying squads using a vehicle tracking software.

Returning officers of all the three Lok Sabha constituencies will monitor the movement of flying squads in Chennai in the run-up to the elections.

“We have 48 flying squads and 48 static surveillance teams. There were allegations of inadequate surveillance by flying squads in some localities in the city. The software will facilitate online monitoring of the locations where the flying squads are at work,” said an official of the Chennai District Election Office.

If the vehicle is found to have stopped in a locality not related to the complaint, returning officers or observers will study the cause and take action against the members of the squad concerned.

The flying squads consist of a senior executive magistrate as head, one senior police officer of the police station, one videographer and armed police personnel.
