Flea markets set to debut in two months

Even top brands are expected to set up shop on weekend evenings on playgrounds and in parks

In two months, Chennai will have its own flea markets on playgrounds and in parks, where even top brands are expected to set up shop on weekend evenings.

The markets will be open on Saturdays and Sundays on at least 200 premises in all Chennai Corporation zones.

“Residents can experience the fun of shopping in an affordable manner. The proposed market will be a site for top brands to sell their wares at reasonable prices,” said an official.

Games and music shows

Each such facility will comprise a number of stalls selling wares such as furniture, saris, shoes, bags, books, electronic goods and bangles.

The market, with games for children and music shows, is likely to remain open from 6 p.m. to 10 pm.

“The markets will not disrupt the activity of children on playgrounds,” said the official.

Allotment of stalls

The decision on those who will be selling goods at the market is likely to be taken in June.

The allotment of stalls will be based on their potential impact on the environment.

More than 280 parks and playgrounds are likely to be used for the purpose, without tampering with prevailing conditions.
