In his address at the 64th Republic Day parade on Saturday, Governor K. Rosaiah paid tribute to Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s efforts to improve the state’s economy.
“This is the first time in the history of the industries department of Tamil Nadu that 12 memoranda of understanding were signed in a single day in November 2012 with a total investment of Rs. 20,925 crores,” he said.
The distribution of free milch cows, the setting up of curriculum development cells in universities and the comprehensive health insurance scheme which benefitted poor patients came for praise in his speech. The governor hoisted the tricolour at a colourful function at the Marina Beach in the presence of the Chief Minister and witnessed the Republic Day parade.
The State Express Transport Corporation honoured an employee’s son for winning the award for exceptional achievement from the President of India on the occasion. Trade union leaders, employees and officials attended the programme.
Several government departments and resident welfare associations also held programmes to mark the occasion.
Election commissioner S. Iyer hoisted the flag at the Election Commission office. Central excise commissioner R. Bhagyadevi and Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board managing director B. Chandra Mohan led the celebrations in their respective offices. Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited celebrated by hoisting the Indian flag on its premises.
In Kancheepuram, collector L. Sitherasenan, who unfurled the tricolour at the police district parade ground, accepted the guard of honour and witnessed the march past.
Tiruvallulr collector K. Veera Raghava Rao distributed welfare assistance to beneficiaries and honoured freedom fighters.
