Five persons were injured, two of them seriously, when a Sports Utility Vehicle (Scorpio) veered out of control while trying to overtake another vehicle on Kamarajar Salai near Vivekanandar Illam on Wednesday evening.

Police sources said that around 7 p.m. the SUV hit five two-wheelers and then got on to the pavement. The driver of the SUV fled the spot.

Dinesh Durai, an eyewitness, said that the driver was trying to overtake another vehicle on the busy road when its right front tyre burst. He lost control of the vehicle and went to the other side of the road hitting the oncoming motorists. The Anna Square police have seized the Scorpio and the five motorcycles. Further investigations are on.

While the seriously injured were admitted to the Government Stanley Hospital, the other three victims were taken to the Government Royapettah Hospital.
