Fishworkers seek ST status

June 12, 2016 12:00 am | Updated October 18, 2016 02:25 pm IST - CHENNAI:

The National Fishworkers’ Forum (NFF) has urged the Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry to take steps to include traditional fisher communities in the list of Scheduled Tribes.

In a statement here, NFF chairperson M. Ilango requested the Chief Ministers to take up the issue with Prime Minister Narendra Modi when they meet him as it was a long-pending demand and was on the top of the NFF’s agenda.

“During the recent Assembly elections, the AIADMK, which has returned to power, and the DMK, promised in their manifesto that they would do the needful. We hope the Assembly adopts a resolution and sends it to the Centre. Already Kerala and Puducherry legislatures have done so,” Mr. Ilango said.
