The inspection ordered by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) of the Marina Loop Road project by an advocate-commissioner was halted on Saturday, after local fishermen mobbed him and the team demanding that the road expansion should be scrapped.
Last week, the NGT, hearing a petition challenging the whole project, ordered for an advocate-commissioner’s inspection to determine if the road was being expanded on the seaward side.
The petition had contended that the project was in violation of Coastal Regulation Zone Rules.
When the team headed by lawyer K.R. Harin began the inspections on Friday, about 50 residents of Nochikuppam, a fishing hamlet insisted that he record their objection to the project.
The team explained that this was not their work and that they were there to only measure the road for violation and check if there were any encroachments on the stretch.
However, the fishermen then mobbed the team that also included the petitioner in the case and Corporation officials.
As a result, the team cancelled the inspection.
The NGT will hear the case again on Monday. Earlier, it had stayed the works temporarily till further orders.
Team set up wit advocate-commissioner was meant to see if the road expansion on the stretch violated
