A team of officials of the Fisheries Department will assess the damages caused by the severe cyclonic storm ‘Thane' in localities near the coast in Chennai, said Minister for Animal Husbandry T.K.M. Chinnayya.
Many residents along the Chennai coast were evacuated by the civic body as ‘Thane' crossed the Tamil Nadu coast on Friday.
The assessment would be completed in two days and the data would be used for relief operations, the Minister said.
The team led by the Minister visited localities such as Kottivakkam, Palavakkam, Periya Neelankarai, Chinna Neelankarai, Injambakkam, Chinnandikuppam, Uthandi and Panaiyur on Saturday. Member of Parliament Chitlapakkam S.Rajendran and Mayor Saidai S.Duraisamy were present.
Sholinganallur MLA K.P.Kandan said that many residents along the coast had requested speedy action from officials towards restoration of the damaged facilities. Boats and fishing nets of many fishermen were damaged in the places we visited, he added.
Removal of debris
The Corporation has removed the debris strewn on the roads and residential localities of the coastal areas in the newly added areas of the city, said Mr. Kandan.
Food supply for affected people was carried out in coastal localities on Saturday also, he added.
The Minister and Mayor assured residents of quick action for restoration of their livelihood.
