A fire broke out on Monday afternoon at a factory in Kannigapuram, Vyasarpadi where plastic and rubber waste were stored in large quantity. No one was injured. Sources with the Fire and Rescue Services said the fire was reported around 1.30 p.m. at the factory on Dr. Ambedkar College Road and a fire tender each from Vyasarpadi, Vepery, Washermenpet, Sembium and Royapuram stations were rushed to the spot. Over 50 firemen were sent the spot.
“Scrap items, including plastic and rubber waste, stored in plastic sacks in front of the factory caught fire. The flames started to spread to more sacks piled up and turned into a ragging inferno,” said D.N. Velayuthan Nair, Divisional Fire Officer, Chennai City North.
The fire was controlled following a 45-minute-long battle by firemen who also prevented the blaze from spreading to nearby hutments. Nine water lorries were deployed and the flames were put out completely by around 3.30 p.m., he added.
The cause of the fire and the loss suffered is under investigation by the Pulianthope police.
