Four killed in Chennai apartment fire

Five injured were taken to hospital.

Four persons, including two children, were killed in a fire that broke out reportedly due to short-circuit in an electricity box near the ground floor of an apartment in Vadapalani, Chennai, around 4.45 a.m. on Monday.

Thick smoke billowed as the fire spread to the other floors of the apartment in South Perumal Street. Meenakshi (60), Selvi (38), Shalini (10) and Sanjay (3) died due to suffocation.

Five injured persons were taken to the to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital.

The fire destroyed 14 vehicles parked in the ground floor.

Fire and rescue service personnel began fire dousing operations.
