Pursuing a swift course of action in the Wallajah Road accident case, Commissioner of Police S. George on Wednesday scrapped the first information report (FIR) that blamed the motorcyclist involved.
The constable who was driving the van has been booked in a fresh FIR and the sub-inspector who dealt with the case initially has been transferred upon orders by the top cop.
In the accident on June 5, A. Prabhu (29), a technical engineer with Aircel, was badly injured after his motorcycle was rammed by a speeding police van.
The accident took place in the afternoon on Wallajah Road when Prabhu was taking a u-turn on his motorcycle, with his friend Balamurugan (32) riding pillion. The police van, driven by constable Ganesan, knocked down the motorcycle, injuring the two men, who are still undergoing treatment in a hospital.
Anna Square Traffic Investigation had filed a case against Prabhu for rash riding and endangering the lives of fellow motorists.
However, the police failed to book Ganesan, stating the motorcyclist was riding on the wrong side of the road.
Media reports on the incident, based on eye-witness accounts, indicated that motorcyclist Prabhu was not at fault but was riding in the right direction. It was the police van driver who had caused the accident by speeding, eye-witnesses said.
Following this, Mr. George ordered a probe into the accident and met the family members of the victims, Prabhu and Balamurugan on Tuesday.
“After assuring them of immediate action in the matter, the Commissioner also spoke to Apollo Hospitals authorities and enquired about Prabhu’s condition. He promised necessary help from the police department for both the injured men,” said an investigating officer.
A fresh FIR has been registered based on a complaint from Prabhu and departmental action will be initiated against the police driver Ganesan. Sub-inspector Paul Raj, who probed the accident case initially, was issued a ‘punishment’ transfer, the officer said.
